Community July 4th celebration planned
The July 4th holiday will once again feature a big fireworks show for Cairo and Grady County on Wednesday evening, July 4th. This will be the third year for the community event and this year promises to be even bigger and better.
The celebration will be held at Cairo High School’s West Thomas Stadium. The stadium will open at 8 p.m. for those who want to come and get an early seat and there is no admission charge. Due to construction at the high school, everyone should enter through the north door of the old gymnasium near the cafeteria.
The fireworks display is slated to start around 9:30 p.m. Sponsors for the show include the City of Cairo, Grady County Commission, Mr. Chick and Jay Evans-Badcock and More of Cairo. Other local sponsors are Center Drugs, Pollock Insurance Co., Stallings Motors, Graco Fertilizer, First Investments, Robbie Burns Construction, South Georgia Outdoors, and GRITS.
The City of Cairo and Grady County Board of Commissioners each pay one third of the total cost of the fireworks and the other third is donated by local businesses with Mr. Chick and Badcock & More donating half of the local contributions and the other contributors picking up the rest.
“It is exciting to know that once again this year our governments, community and businesses have agreed to sponsor the show and we can stay right here in our community and watch a professional fireworks show. A big thank you goes out to our local city and county governments for partnering on this, and all of our local businesses and individuals that donated money to bring this great tradition back to our community,” said Michael Best, the organizer and chief fundraiser for the event.
The show will once again be presented by East Coast Pyrotechnics, Inc. of Catawba, S.C. The fireworks will be fired from the east road on the other side of the CHS track, so the home side of the stadium will provide an excellent view of the festivities. The show will last approximately 25 minutes again this year.
Admission is free and parking is available at Cairo High School in the student parking lot. No alcohol is allowed on the school campus and no one will be allowed on the football field.
