Organizers planning special King Day parade

Organizers of the local MLK JR Day celebration are working to make the 2018 event in Cairo a proper observance of King’s dream and sacrifice as 2018 is the 50th anniversary of his assassination. They are taking reservations now from businesses, churches and other organizations that want to have a float in the annual parade, scheduled for Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, at 11 a.m.
Floats will be judged with winners taking home a trophy. Groups are also welcome to walk the parade route carrying banners that display their name and the day’s theme.
The parade route begins at Roddenbery Memorial Library, continues down Broad Street to MLK JR Boulevard then to Holder Park where a program with featured speaker will take place followed by a community lunch.
This year’s parade Grand Marshal and program speaker is Gary Grant and the day’s theme is “50 Years, Soaring Toward Justice.”
A group of private citizens here make up the Martin Luther King, Jr., Collaborative Group that sponsors the events.
“This parade involves the entire community to unify and keep Dr. King’s Dream Alive,” states Renee Gee-Theophille, president of the collaborative.
In addition to the parade and program on MLK JR Day, the collaborative also awards college scholarships to two graduating seniors at Cairo High School each year.
